Enerpoint for Africa

  • Project: Schools in the Sudan
  • Associations: Missione delle Suore madri della Nigrizia Comboniane

We are in Sudan, the largest African country struck by one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history: a civil conflict that has lasted over 40 years. The international community has called it "the most serious humanitarian situation".

Many efforts have been done by the international community and numerous charities including attempts to try to bring a minimum of order in this land.

We too have decided to increase economic aid to this deeply affected population, to the community of the Comboni Fathers and, especially, to Father Salvatore who's our reference point. He has long trying to help directly the people of the sudanease city of El Obeid, a town of about 1 million habitants and the capital of the region of Kordofana.

In this town, in the parish followed by the Comboni Missionaries, there have already been founded a dozen kindergartens, two large primary schools, a small secondary school for adults (the illiteracy rate is very large), as well as five other centers in rural areas.

The latest project undertaken by the Fathers is the renovation of other training centers, as the existing ones are in very bad conditions. This activity will involve a huge effort by Father Salvatore, given that "the situation I have found is almost complete anarchy and so it is difficult both to start or to revitilize a project".

This activity includes the preparation of a welcoming environment for the families to provide them a meeting place where they can teach and discuss the basic values necessary for the development of civil society such as marriage, relationship problems, child rearing, ...

Future efforts will be directed initially to primary education (the idea is to make small and limited interventions in order to follow them carefully and closely) and secondarily to the development of youth activities in order to enable young people to meet, discuss and go deep into matters relevant to their way of both human and spiritual growth.

So father Salvatore writes:
"I am convinced that if we create an environment where families can come with their children, where they feel safe and can share with other families their difficulties, then this situation may reach other people who will pick up future projects development. The signs that I get are encouraging: families were wanting something like this for a long time, so I trust in Providence that will help me to finalize at least this simple family project step".

We all believe in the activity of Father Salvatore and will continue to support him in his long journey confident of his success.
